Signs You Need Air Conditioning Repair

byadmin

Most homes have either central air conditioning units or stand alone room air conditioners like window units to cool the living area. Both of these units require regular maintenance and occasional air conditioning repair over the years. ACs are built to last for many years of consistent use under extreme conditions. Evidence that the AC unit is not functioning at its best is increased energy bills. When the unit starts to fail, the efficiency plummets and results in increased consumption of electricity. A home owner can reduce fuel bills by regular tune-ups and need based air conditioning repair.

The window air conditioner consists of a motor, evaporator coils, condenser coils, compressor and other components. The main components of the system are sealed. If you need air conditioning repair for any of the sealed components such as the motor, coils or compressor you should consult with professionals. Minor repairs and scheduled maintenance can keep your unit functioning efficiently. Small repairs and maintenance can be done by the home owner.

Dirt can severely affect the functioning of your unit. The air filters and coils should be kept clean. Filters can be removed from the unit, brushed, cleaned and restored. In some units, filters are not replaceable. The old filters may have to be replaced by entirely new filters. During the summer, filters should be cleaned or replaced every one or two months. If you live in a dusty area, filters get dirtier faster. If you own a furry pet, the filters may need more frequent replacement. Dirt that penetrates beyond the filters will settle on the evaporator coil. The heat absorption capacity of the coil is reduced substantially by these sediments. This results in reduced efficiency of the unit.

The outdoor unit of an air conditioner should also be cleaned regularly. Foliage, dirt and soil can restrict air flow and cause the machine to function below its efficiency. The outdoor unit can be cleaned by the home owner to remove dirt, leaves and soil. Any shrubbery or foliage should be kept trimmed so that leaves and soil do not damage the unit.

Often the AC can malfunction because of a faulty thermostat or low levels of coolant or a variety of other reasons. If your AC refuses to start, bring down the setting of your thermostat. If the unit is not cooling, it could arise from a number of reasons such as low levels of refrigerant, dirty or blocked condenser and evaporator or faulty compressor. If your unit does not respond and you are unable to find a solution, call in professionals for air conditioning repair. DC residents can find experienced technicians in the area that provide comprehensive repairs for HVAC.

Stolen minibus recovered 35 years after theft

Friday, November 6, 2009

A 1965 Volkswagen minibus that was stolen in 1974 has been recovered by customs agents in Los Angeles. The vintage minibus was in pristine condition, valued at $25,000, and was found during a routine inspection of a shipping container scheduled for departure to The Netherlands. A routine computer database search on its vehicle identification number flagged it as having been stolen from a vehicle upholstery shop in Spokane, Washington on July 12, 1974. A custom restoration business in Arizona was attempting to deliver it to overseas clients last month when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

“Pretty amazing, isn’t it?”

The theft appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau database, which is used by border authorities and contains all stolen vehicle records. Most police databases remove unsolved vehicle thefts after five years.

The California Highway Patrol does not suspect the restorer of wrongdoing, according to investigating officer Mike Maleta. Possession of the vehicle apparently changed several times. Police in Spokane have not yet located the rightful owner, whose identity has not been released to the press. Maleta hopes that a trail of registration documents and interviews will uncover the thief.

“[The restoration firm owner is] a victim himself. He was an innocent purchaser…”

The Allstate insurance company paid $2500 shortly after the theft occurred and wants to take possession of the vintage minibus. Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet expects that after the necessary paperwork is processed the firm will sell it at auction.

Tips For Staying Fit After The Age Of 40

By Daniel Clay

If you are 40 and feeling somewhat weak and worn out, then do not worry anymore. The science of exercise has proved that one can regain his strength and vitality at any age if the right measures are taken on time. Here are some tips that will help you stay fit and strong even after 40.

Besides the regular exercises and workouts, every person over the age of 40 should follow a specific routine. Discussed below are some tips to assist you in this regard.

Ascertain your priorities. Understand your health problems and speak to the doctor about them. He will give you the correct advice. He will tell you what measures to take. Perhaps, going for morning walks or doing push-ups or squats along with a few pills will relieve you of your health problems. Take the guidance of a personal trainer and he will show you the correct methods of doing your exercises.

Do not neglect if you have any unusual feelings. Always remember that you are no longer young that you can manage everything. The mind stays young but the body wears out along with age. So visit the physician and relate to him what you feel. He is there to diagnose your problems.

Go for regular check-ups especially if you have any heart problems or chronic diseases or diabetes.

Get rid of extra fat. Excess weight leads to a number of diseases like cardiac problems and diabetes. These are deadly diseases and must be taken care of.

Take care of your food habits and stick to a balanced diet. Fatty foods and irregular eating habits often can make you fall sick because your digestive system is no longer as strong as it was earlier. Foods that contain all essential nutrients in the required proportions should be consumed timely. There should not be long gaps between meals. Be careful not to eat more than usual even if the food is very tasty.

Another interesting thing that will help you to stay fit is joining a laughter club. It is the best medicine one can think of. Make friends and keep yourself engaged by doing the things you love to do. It keeps the mind free from all tension and worries.

Be young at heart. Never let your age weigh you down or make you feel lonely and neglected. But never do anything in a hurry. Keep control over your anger and excitement. They are very harmful and there are many instances where individuals have suffered from heart attacks due to continuous stress. Actually the blood pressure goes up and it affects the heart and sometimes even the cerebrum.

So, carry on with your regular work but in a measured way and not as you would have done in your 20s and 30s. If you are really serious about keeping fit even after 40, follow the rules of keeping fit and you are sure to enjoy a happy and healthy life for long.

Finding The Suitable Used Caravans For Sale And Good Caravan Repairs

Finding the Suitable Used Caravans for Sale and Good Caravan Repairs

by

Homestead Caravans

Finding decent used caravans for sale can be as tricky as buying a good second hand car particularly for someone who has never owned a caravan before. Trying to find somewhere that does reliable caravan repairs, too, is an undertaking beset with difficulty and with caravan ownership more popular than ever before, both are getting harder. The problem is this: when something is in demand, lots of businesses pop up to service that demand. And with multiple businesses offering a service (in this case, used caravans for sale or caravan repairs), the law of averages unfortunately dictates that a lot of them are going to be less than perfect.

So how does a person go about finding used caravans for sale that they can trust, or caravan repairs that are worth what they are paying? In part, unfortunately, the answer comes with simple experience: once someone is familiar with caravans, the things that go wrong with them and what to look out for when buying them, they ll be in a better position to judge whether the used caravans for sale they are being offered, or the caravan repairs they are being quoted for, are worth the money asked. Again, the whole experience is very similar to that of used cars: until a person knows what tends to go wrong with second hand cars, they re unlikely to be able to make a good judgement on whether the vehicle or repair they are being offered is a good one.

Here, then, are a few simple things to look for both when considering used caravans for sale and when accepting or rejecting a price for caravan repairs. Like cars, caravans are subject to an easily identifiable roster of recurring gremlins. Look for those, and talk to whoever is offering caravan repairs about them and it will be a lot easier to work out whether the prices being quoted are fair or not.

The first and most common killer of caravans is damp. With the exception of Gypsy caravans, which are built dry all caravans have seals and seams that eventually fall prey to water ingress. Once damp has got in it s very hard to repair or maintain: so any used caravans for sale that bear evidence of damp (mould patches, seam repairs, discoloured curtains or strong musty smells) should be treated with caution. Ceilings and floors are the most likely candidates for damp damage: when viewing used caravans for sale, look for bubbles on the inside of the ceiling, and stamp on the floor to test for weak spots. Also, press the walls. Any soft patch under the wall covering is a likely indicator of damp ingress.

Caravan repairs are harder to quantify, though a good basic rule also applies to damp. A caravan with minor damp ingress can be dried and repaired: a caravan where damp has settled in wall, floor or ceiling is impossible to save without rebuilding the shell. Really, the best rule of thumb when considering quotes for caravan repairs is how far the company concerned seems prepared to go: fixing windows or tow bars is one thing, but promises to repair a caravan with serious damp problems should set alarm bells ringing.

The best advice anyone can give on the subject of both caravan repairs, and viewing used caravans for sale: talk to people who have owned and lived in them. Take someone along who has long-term experience of caravans. They, more than an article or even a book, can prevent holidays from being ruined by caravans that should never have been sold.

Meat Loaf calls off European tour

Friday, November 9, 2007

American musician Meat Loaf has canceled the remaining dates of his 2007 European tour on Tuesday. This decision was announced less than a week after the performer prematurely ended a concert in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Earlier reports attributed Meat Loaf’s medical problems at Newcastle to a sore throat. This week’s announcements indicate that the rocker sustained a vocal cord cyst that requires weeks of treatment and possibly surgery.

Despite Meat Loaf’s indication at the Newcastle concert that his career might have ended, a most recent statement on his fan site declared that he would be “coming back strong in 2008” with hopes of new concerts following treatment.

IBM Releases 500 patents to open source community

Saturday, January 15, 2005

United States —”IBM hereby commits not to assert any of the 500 U.S. patents listed below, as well as all counterparts of these patents issued in other countries, against the development, use or distribution of Open Source Software.” [1]

So begins the pledge IBM has made to “any individual, community, or company” writing or using software defined as “open source” by the Open Source Initiative (OSI).

The patents include software for text recognition and database management.[2]

“True innovation leadership is about more than just the numbers of patents granted. It’s about innovating to benefit customers, partners and society”, said Dr. John E. Kelly, IBM senior vice president, Technology and Intellectual Property. “Our pledge today is the beginning of a new era in how IBM will manage intellectual property.”[3]

“This is not a one-time event”, said Dr. Kelly. “While IBM will continue to demonstrate leadership in patent output, through measures such as today’s pledge, we will increasingly use patents to encourage and protect global innovation and interoperability through open standards and we urge others to do so as well.”

Lawrence Lessig, law professor at Stanford Law School and free software proponent commented: “This is exciting. It is IBM making good on its commitment to encourage a different kind of software development and recognizing the burden that patents can impose.”[4]

Not all are confident of IBM’s motives, though.

Florian Mueller, campaign manager of anti-patent website,NoSoftwarePatents.com, accused IBM of hypocrisy because of lobbying in the European Union to push through theComputer Implemented Inventions Directive.

“IBM is just being hypocritical because they want to appease the open source community and make themselves popular,” said Mueller.

“In Europe, IBM is a driving force behind the extension of the scope of patentability with respect to software. If IBM wants to assume the role of a post-Christmas benefactor, they’d better stop their aggressive patent lobbying in the EU and their shameless squeezing of small and medium-sized companies with its patent portfolio.” [5]

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.
