Shuttle launch called off due to faulty fuel tank sensor

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

The U.S. space agency NASA called off the launch of Space shuttle Discovery today after a problem with a fuel sensor in the external tank used to detect fuel exhaustion. According to the agency-run NASA TV, the low-fuel sensor was either malfunctioning or damaged. The launch was already facing the threat of a scrub due to thunderstorms in the area.

The sensor is one of four used to trigger the engine cutout after launch. Although only two are required for normal operation, and the Shuttle can be flown with one, NASA elected to maintain full redundancy. Should more of the sensors fail, the engine might burn out due to lack of fuel, a situation that has not been tested.

The problem was detected during a simulation of an empty tank. When placed in a mode simulating an empty tank, three of the sensors correctly registered that the tank was empty, while the faulty sensor stayed in the “full” state. NASA is currently unsure whether the problem relates to the sensor, the instrumentation circuits reporting the sensor’s state, or the simulation circuits.

The problem comes after a separate incident yesterday when a cockpit window cover fell from the Orbiter, damaging thermal protection tiles. A similar problem caused the replacement of the fuel tank in June. NASA described the problem as an “intermittent fault”.

The launch, which was scheduled for 3:51 ET (20:51 UTC), would have been the first launch of a shuttle since Columbia‘s February 2003 crash which killed all crew members aboard.

It is still unknown to NASA officials what caused the sensor to become defective. It is also unknown at the moment whether the issue will be fixed on the launch pad, or in the Vehicle Assembly Building – in which it takes close to a full day’s time to transport a shuttle between the two areas.

In the interim, the crew of the shuttle will stay at KSC unless there are further delays, in which case the crew might be transported back to JSC in Houston for refresher training.

Tips To Sell Your House Fast In A Depressed Real Estate Market

Tips To Sell Your House Fast In A Depressed Real Estate Market

by

Greg Coggiola

In order to sell your house fast, you must prepare your house for a quick sale. The following points are a good check list of the things to pay attention to:

1)Price Most house buyers always look at the price as the first thing when looking to buy a house. If you price it lower than other similar houses in the market, it sticks out more in the market and attracts more interested buyers. Your house will lose market appeal if it has been on the market more than 3 weeks. Avoid being emotionally attached to the price you set for your house. It is no longer important what you paid for it; what matters is how does the current price compare with similar houses in the neighborhood. If you can price the house lower than similar houses in the area, go for it! A Realtor could help in helping you price your house competitively in the market. look at your home like a home buyer, instead of adopting a seller stance. What factors make it more appealing than other houses, location, size and other factors etc? If you were looking to buy a house in this area, would you buy it at the price with the amenities it has?

2)Physical condition of the house What is the first impression you get when you look at it from the outside? Does it need some TLC? When someone steps through the door, are they met with a nice, welcoming smell and atmosphere? Would this be your dream house if you were looking for a house? You must be careful not to spend too much money fixing it up, or you may be unable to price it competitively. If at all, most of the work should be simple clean up and minor touches.

3)What if have a high mortgage balance or it needs repairs? Sometimes your mortgage balance might be too high or it needs repairs. In such a case, it may be necessary to talk to real estate investors who buy and sell houses in your local market. Real estate investors can buy your house even when it needs repairs or even if the mortgage balance is high. In most cases, most real estate investors will let you know if they can buy your house typically within 24 to 48 hours. They can handle most situations and discuss all numbers and terms with no obligations.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Differentiating Between A Strain And A Herniated Disc Neck Pain Explained

Submitted by: Patrick Foote

People sometimes say they have a herniated disc in the neck as a way of describing any discomfort they experience in or around the cervical (upper) region of the spine. However, to ensure that you start the proper treatments for your pain, it s important to know the difference between an actual cervical herniated disc and a cervical muscle strain. Although the two conditions may produce some similar symptoms, a herniated disc usually is more serious, and will require a more structured treatment plan as well as the advisement of a medical professional.

Disc Pain vs. Muscle Pain

A herniated disc in the neck occurs when a tear develops in the outer wall (annulus fibrosus) of an intervertebral disc located in between any of the first seven cervical vertebrae. These discs are fibrous, spongy pads that separate adjacent vertebrae, absorb shock, and help facilitate movement. While annular tears can develop due to sudden injury, they most often occur over time as a result of degeneration that accompanies the aging process. Local pain in the neck or upper back may result from nerve fibers in the annular wall becoming irritated, though most patients report feeling radiculopathic pain, which occurs when the inner disc fluid (nucleus pulposus) leaks through the tear and comes in contact with nearby spinal nerves.

A muscle strain, on the other hand, is almost always due to sudden injury or overexertion. It involves the overstretching or tearing of muscle fibers and possibly the tendons attached to the muscle.

So how can you tell the difference between a herniated disc in the neck and muscle pain? Pay attention to your symptoms. A herniated disc in the neck will likely produce symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness that feel as if they are radiating throughout your neck, shoulders, arms, hands, or fingers. The discomfort of a herniated disc may come in spurts, but will generally last longer (usually several weeks or months) than the pain of a strained muscle. A strained muscle will cause local pain, aching, stiffness, or throbbing, but will generally not produce radicular tingling or pins-and-needles sensations. While the pain of a strained muscle can be constant, the muscle fibers will generally heal themselves over a period of several days or weeks with proper treatments.

Do I Need to Get a Diagnosis from a Doctor?

If you are experiencing neck pain that has lasted for longer than a week, you should make an appointment to see your doctor. He or she can review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and evaluate your symptoms to determine if a muscle strain or herniated disc is at fault. In some cases, medical imaging an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan may be required in order to confirm the diagnosis.

Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, you and your doctor can work together to devise a treatment plan. Some of the same treatment methods might be prescribed for a herniated disc as for a muscle strain. These might include periods of rest, over-the-counter or prescription analgesics or anti-inflammatories, and hot/cold compresses. Of course, a symptomatic herniated disc will likely require additional treatment, which is why it is so important to get the diagnosis correct.

Israel evicts two Palestinian families from their homes

Monday, August 3, 2009

Two Palestinian families who have been living in East Jerusalem since 1956, were evicted from their homes on Sunday after an Israeli court rejected their appeal filed against the eviction. The eviction comes after increasing international pressure on Israel to stop settlement activity and end home evictions.

Israeli security forces entered the homes at 6:00 a.m. (local time) and forcibly removed the family and international activists who were also living in the homes. At least 19 children were among those removed. Al Jazeera reports that a family was beaten with batons as they tried to get back into their house. JTA reports that Jewish families moved into the homes shortly after the Palestinian families were evicted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has laid biblical claim to the areas of East Jerusalem and has stated that Jews have the right to live anywhere in the city. Although Jerusalem is internationally recognized as occupied territory, Israel continues to evict Palestinians and instead build Jewish only apartments in the area, an action which is considered to be illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel has plans for 350 new apartment buildings in East Jerusalem. U.N special coordinator for Middle East Peace, Robert Serry, condemned the evictions as “totally unacceptable”.

The international community, including the United States, has called on Israel to stop settlement activity and allow for the creation of a Palestinian state.

Locally designed, low emissions car launched in Qatar

Friday, November 30, 2012

Qatari non-profit organization Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) launched a low emissions car at the 2012 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 18) in Doha. The car was designed and developed in Qatar.

Revealed during a press conference at the Qatar National Convention Centre, the car in addition to an internal combustion engine, includes an automotive thermoelectric generator designed to capture waste heat to produce hydrogen. GORD expects the heat waste collecting system to be compatible with any gasoline or compressed natural gas car.

GORD chairman Dr Al-Horr summarised the key concepts of the invention in a statement saying, “Our car produces electricity at no cost by capturing thermal waste energy, reducing costs and eliminating the need for an external source of electricity. Also, bulky compressed-hydrogen cylinders are a thing of the past, as our concept accomplishes the production of hydrogen by using water through fuel cells integrated within the car.”

Most of the energy in Qatari vehicle comes from the the car’s gasoline tank, supplemented by a thin film photo-voltaic panel on the roof. Normally in a combustion engine, chemical energy stored in a fuel, such as gasoline, is converted into heat energy through combustion. This heat energy is then converted into mechanical energy, manifested as an increase in pressure in the combustion chamber due to the kinetic energy of the combustion gases. The kinetic energy of these combustion gases are then converted into work; because of the inefficiencies in converting chemical energy into useful work, internal combustion engines have a theoretical maximum effiecincy of 37% (with what is achievable in day to day applications being about half of this). Of the chemical energy in the consumed fuel used by an internal combustion engine 40% is dissipated as waste heat. However, the Qatari vehicle uses a thermoelectric generator to convert this waste heat into electricity. Such generators are used in space vehicles, and produce electricity when thermoelectric materials are subjected to a temperature gradient, the greater the gradient the greater the amount of electrcity produced. In the GORD vehicle the electricity produced is used to electrolyse potable water to produce hydrogen which can be introduced into the vehicle’s existing fuel system.

The researchers showed that the heat waste collection engine caused a decrease in the car’s emissions, including a decrease of carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide emissions by more than 50%, the fuel efficiency increasing by 20%. On its website, GORD said that the heat waste collector engine is universal, “Any car can be adapted to accommodate the system as it doesn’t alter any electro-mechanical systems”.

Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Friday, April 11, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

New Zealand pilot selling uniform online

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

“Jeremy”, an airplane pilot in Nelson, has put his uniform on sale for NZ$1.00 at New Zealand auction site TradeMe. The pilot had lost his job when Origin Pacific Airways fired 230 staff because of financial difficulties and is now trying to “make ends meet this week,” the pilot said. The auction has already reached 31 bids and reached $101 as of 7.30 a.m. August 15.

‘Jeremy’, the pilot, said on the auction page, that he is offering “a rare piece of Kiwi aviation history,”.

“This is an authentic Origin Pacific Jetstream pilot’s uniform lovingly drycleaned for one last time before its unfortunate retirement. It’s travelled many stormy nights and many sunrises and has seen almost 50,000 Kiwis safely to their destinations from Invercargill to the Far North. It has 778,000km on it, yet it looks as crisp today as it did when it was born,” the pilot described on TradeMe.

One bidder had offered $40 if he sold the uniform immediately but that offer was turned down in order to see the auction go until Sunday.

David Collier, Origin Pacific passenger services general manager, said “The uniform was Origin Pacific’s property and the pilot should not be selling it, but I think it’s probably one of those things you’d have to grin at and move on.”

Jay, Waitakere, asked on the auction page if the uniform came with a plane. The pilot replied “No, but if you want to start an airline I know where you can find a great bunch of people.”

The auction is closing on August 20, Sunday.

Using Laser Skin Treatment To Improve Your Appearance

Submitted by: Adrianna Notton

Laser skin treatment is a common plastic surgery procedure that is used to treat skin imperfections. To accomplish the task, a surgeon uses a carbon dioxide laser to vaporize the top layers of the skin removing them in order to allow the inner layers to form new cells. This procedure is often utilized as a means of treating early aging especially for eliminating or minimizing problems like fine lines, wrinkles, freckles and sunspots.

You can think of receiving this kind of resurfacing if your lifestyle has caused your skin to deteriorate. This can happen due to issues such as excessive smoking, stress, Rosacea and pollution. You can also consider getting it if you suffer from issues such as brown marks, freckles and small veins caused by the aging process. You can also get it if you have scars and burns that you want to conceal or if you want to remove tattoos.

It is also appropriate if you have port wine stains and spider veins. The procedure is performed when one is sedated and it is often complete within a few minutes. Nonetheless, it may take longer if the area being worked on is large such as the entire face. Recovery time depends on the deepness of laser penetration and will take longer if it penetrated deeply.

There are many benefits of getting this type of resurfacing in comparison to other procedures. For example, bleeding does not happen and the procedure takes a short time. The other advantage is that the level of discomfort experienced after the operation is low. In addition to this, the procedure is not as invasive as a facelift but is effective in removing wrinkles and lines. Another advantage is that a patient does not need a lot of care after the procedure unlike the one needed after getting a surgical facelift.

You will find that the time taken to notice that the procedure was successful can be long but you will see that your appearance is great after a couple of months. The effects of this procedure are temporary since they are affected by the normal aging process. However, you can receive a re-treatment after some years. The popular treatments used are the Fraxiel and the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments.

After using Fraxiel treatment, you will look much younger. To accomplish this, a surgeon uses 1000 small microscopic laser columns, which treat one section of the body at a time. The tissues surrounding the area that the surgeon is treating are not affected. The purpose served by the laser columns is stimulating the production of healthier, smoother and younger looking skin through the replacement of damaged tissues.

The IPL treatment on the other hand is accomplished through the utilization of white light, which contains many frequencies and colors of light. This is different from the laser since it utilizes only one wavelength of color or light. IPL is utilized in the treatment of many problems since many different lights are used. When you receive this form of resurfacing, you will appear more radiant, youthful and bright.

One usually takes a period of two weeks to four weeks to recover after receiving laser skin treatment. Some people experience redness or pinkness on their skin but this fades away within a short time leaving it looking naturally youthful. Other side effects that one is likely to experience include temporary rashes or allergies but they subside after a month. You can receive this type of resurfacing safely regardless of your age group.
