Showing Your Initiative To Succeed Through Education

by

William Hauselberg

A Higher Education can open doors for people who will be entering the work force upon graduation as well as for those who have already begun their careers. A degree from an accredited institution can be a powerful tool for advancing your career or for getting your foot into the door. Reaching this goal, however, can be challenging. It takes a great deal of initiative, hard work and dedication to graduate with a degree in your chosen field. The task is even more daunting for those of us who have already joined the workforce, started a family or both.

Improving Your Current Position

Starting or furthering your education after you have joined the workforce or begun your career shows a great deal of initiative. If you are looking to advance in your current field or position it is important to understand the needs of the company or person you work for. Ask your current employer what skills or certifications would help to further advance your career within their organization. This will give you a clearer picture of what path you need to follow in your education. It also shows your employer that you are motivated to succeed and are doing what it takes to make yourself a better employee.

Smoke from massive warehouse fire in Buffalo, New York USA can be seen 40 miles away

Monday, May 14, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

Scholastic sued for Harry Potter copyright infringement

Thursday, July 15, 2010

A trustee of the estate of the late author Adrian Jacobs filed a lawsuit against the US publisher of the Harry Potter series, Scholastic Inc, on Tuesday. He claimed that J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, had copied scenes from Jacob’s novel, The Adventures of Willy the Wizard, to the fourth novel of the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The suit followed a similar case last year, in which the trustee sued the UK publisher of the series, Bloomsbury Publishing plc. Both of these cases are currently pending.

The complaint stated that in both books, the protagonists “are required to deduce the exact nature of the central task in the competition”, and had done so in a bathroom. Both books also involved “rescuing hostages imprisoned by a community of half-human, half-animal creatures.” The suit also claimed that Christopher Little, a literary agent of Rowling, was originally the literary agent of Jacobs. The claim was denied by Scholastic.

Scholastic called the claim “completely without merit”. They pointed out that Rowling had said in February that she had never read Jacobs’ book. The trustee said that the US was the world’s largest foreign market, so they brought their first overseas action there. He demanded that all copies of the Harry Potter novel be destroyed, and all the profit made by the book given to him.

Thursday, December 13, 2007

She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Doctor Who returns as UK Saturday night timeslot lord

Sunday, March 27, 2005

After almost a decade off the air, the science fiction television series Doctor Who returned with new episodes to BBC airwaves on Saturday night, drawing a large audience.

Starring movie actor Christopher Eccleston, the ninth actor cast to play the Doctor, as the newly reincarnated Time Lord, the new series showed off a bigger budget with expensive special effects and a much darker — and sexier — tone. The new star and series got a blessing from actor Sylvester McCoy, who played the Doctor in the 1980s.

“I am very envious about not being in it. The writing is terrific and the toys they play with are much more sophisticated than they were in my day,” McCoy wrote in a column for BBC News. “My only criticism was about the TARDIS. It was far too clean. It needs to look a bit more battered and bruised as if it’s been through the odd asteroid or two,” he said.

The Doctor’s new sidekick is played by Billie Piper, whose marriage to Chris Evans ended during filming.

“We’re pleased so many people sat down as a family to watch the return of the Doctor,” a spokesperson said. Families apparently sat down in droves. Preliminary ratings figures show Who wooing 10.5 million viewers at its peak, or more than 44 percent of all television households in the United Kingdom, for the debut episode.

This made it the most-watched show of the evening, easily outpacing second-place Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV, which attracted an average of 7.2 million households.

The series will run for another twelve episodes.

One of the longest-running dramas in British history, Doctor Who has been airing sporadically since its debut in 1963. Ironically, the series cancellation in 1989 was due to low ratings.

Fundraising Australia: Cost For A Cause

Submitted by: Mark Nugent

According to Collins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary of English, Fundraising (noun) activity of collecting money to support a charity or political campaign or organization

In gruelling stretches as is the current status of the world, people from a mixture of nationalities took it to themselves to give their ill-fated country comrades ample assistance amongst which is fundraising in Australia by means of vouchers discounts. Major benefactors of this hand-in-hand aid are school fundraising in NSW, sports fundraising in Sydney, group fundraising in Newcastle, and fundraising brainstorming in Wollongong.

Amid educational institution fundraising is Kidspot.com s School Holiday Zone. It propounds in children holiday activity tips such as free Colouring Pages, Learning Games, Activity Inspiration, Outdoor Games, Online Fun for Kids, Top Play Dough Ideas, Fun Painting Ideas, Chore Charts, Build A Box City, Melted Crayon Art, Make a Superhero Symbol, Build a Newspaper House, Make a Mailbox, Colour by Number Fun, Animal Mask Cut-outs, Ideas Firing the Imagination, Printable Maze Activities, Make Finger Puppets, Weekend Getaway Ideas, Behaviour Reward Charts, Pain-free Air Travel with Kids, Australia s Best Holidays, 10 Ideas Better than TV, Braving the Cinema with Kids, and Play Dates; advertises holiday get-away spots and pursuits like the Kickeroos, Brazilian Soccer Schools Melbourne s Holiday Clinics, Glasshouse Mountains Riding School, Aussie Dance Camp, Seed Sports, DARE Adventures, Active Education, Blacktown Arts Centre, Tennis World Multi Sports Holiday Camp, Soccer Kickstart, Sports Fundamentals, Big Music Rock Holiday School, Activ8 Sports Camps, The Shed Skatepark, Football Star Academy, Baseball Victoria MLB Training with the Pros, Saddle Up with Circle K, Melbourne Sports Institute, and Forrest Vacation Care; and markets School Uniforms leisure interest in activities as Boxy Design, The Uniform Exchange, Made for School, Greens Footwear, Best 4 Backs, The Uniform Shop, Pickles School wear, Braggs School and Sportswear, Aussie School Shop, and JG Uniforms.

In availing these services, the website directs into the program s own profile alongside its prizes, raffles, and vouchers discounts.

Sports fundraising are positioned in a brighter light through the works and wonders of Special Olympics Australia. The group s upcoming occurrence is the Annual TMA Sydney Sports Lunch in June of next year with a three course meal plus premium beverage package, live auctions, and raffles. All the proceeds go straight ahead to the intellectually disabled Australian sportsmen and sportswomen. These people have to pass through a series of competition pathways specifically: state games, national games, Asia Pacific games and world games. To lend a hand, one can donate to local and national programs, become a Personal Best Partner or leave a bequest; visit their online shopping mall, buy gift voucher books, gift cards, and more; attend their occasions; affiliate by means of sponsorships, workplace giving and volunteering; and/or be a fundraiser.

An inspiring example of group fundraising in Newcastle is that of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research which was instigated in 1998 and has raised huge amount of money contributing to life saving research for blood cancers. Their activities levels from run for a cause to cyclone challenges the likes of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Impact Stand, Boxing Day Walrus Dip, Junior Great Winter Run, Nantwich Young Farmers Annual Pantomime Snow White and the Seven Lumberjacks, Mount Kilimanjaro Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, Ho Chi Minh to Angkor Wat Cycle, Cambodia Jungle Trek, Rajasthan Cycle Challenge, Machu Picchu Trek, The 3 Peaks Challenge, Bromsgrove Fun Run, Speedo Open Water Swim Windsor, Ironman UK Bolton, Prudential Ride London, Race the Train, and Zambezi River Challenge. Helping out can be via online, post, or tribute fund in exchange for the enjoyment accompanied by voucher discounts it offers.

In Wollongong, they came up with the idea of a 24 Hour Mega Swim aiming to aid MS patients which are persons showing signs of fatigue, impaired vision, loss of balance or muscle co-ordination, slurred speech, tremors, short term memory loss or paralysis. Their last tally resulted to donations surfacing high as 5000 dollars.

Fundraising benefits the sponsor as well as the recipient. Delving into it deeper, it is the satisfaction of having been able to help out in little ways resulting into children s contentment, disabled persons development, cancer patients newfound hope, and young athletes dream fulfilled that matters most.

Australian Police alerted to child-sex claims at St Stanislaus in 1997

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Following the escalation of investigations into St Stanislaus College in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, Wikinews has obtained a police statement from an alleged victim made in 1997 against priest Brian Joseph Spillane. Spillane is facing 33 charges relating to the allegations.

It had been believed that Bathurst detectives set up Strike Force Header after receiving a complaint from a former St Stanislaus student last year. The complainant came to the police’s attention after he came to Bathurst handing out fliers documenting alleged abuses at the school and providing a link to a website he had set up. St Stanislaus College contacted police and asked them to investigate. Police contacted the alleged victim and asked him if he would like to make a complaint.

In the statement obtained by Wikinews, the same man complained to detectives at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia about abuse by Spillane at St Stanislaus. In the graphic statement, he describes abuse which began following a poker game with the priest at the centre of the allegations. The statement describes further abuses spanning several months.

Bathurst Police refused to comment when contacted about the statement today.
